Parasha
Ariella's parasha was Bo (Exodus 10:1-13:16). It's about the last four plagues of Egypt: hail, locusts, darkness, and death of the firstborn. Also, a lot of matzah. And doorpost blood. Her haftarah was Jeremiah 46:13-46:28. It tells about war against Egypt, and we kind of relive a few of the plagues.
Ariella chanted the Torah portion using Egyptian te'amim (trope) - a combination of Karaite and Rabbanite - because she likes the sound of it.
Instead of a traditional dvar torah, she wrote a midrash, a creative telling of the story. The two main characters are Kana, an Israelite slave who makes canoes out of reeds, and Zahra, an Egyptian girl who grows fruit trees. They’re good friends, and when the plagues come, Kana helps Zahra get through them unharmed. But the last plague, Death Of The Firstborn, is different. While the other plagues were scary, annoying, and hard, even with Kana's help, this plague could actually kill Zahra. What happens? You can find out by reading the midrash.
